Sauteed Vegan Tofu Nugget Recipe

Sauteed Vegan Tofu Nugget Recipe

Tofu is a great plant based food source that is low calorie loaded with protein, calcium, magnesium, and iron. Its not a very popular food in western culture, so many people don’t realize how good it is, or how to even cook it. Try cooking up some tofu with this sauteed vegan tofu nugget recipe. This recipe is vegan and gluten free as well.

Step 1 - Drain Tofu

Tofu comes package in a good bit of water in order to retain its moisture and freshness, so be careful of spilling when you open it. Wrap the tofu in a couple of thick hand towels and gently press, so the towels can absorb as much water as possible without breaking or crushing the tofu.

Step 2 - Make Tofu Coating

You’re going to need a medium sized container with a lid or a zip lock bag for this next step. In this contain you’re going to put the following.

  • 2 tbsp of corn starch
  • 1 tsp of adobo
  • a pinch of cayenne pepper (CAREFUL ITS HOT)
  • a sprinkle of sea salt (Optional)
  • a sprinkle of taco seasoning (I use McCormick)

Once you’ve put all the seasoning in, mix them together until evenly blended.

Step 3 - Cut Tofu Into Cubes

A typical pack of tofu can be cut into 24 cubes or nuggets. You don’t want the nuggets to be too thick because it’ll take a bit too long for the middle to cook and you won’t get that crunchy nugget texture all the way through.

Step 4 - Setup Your Cooking Pan

Grab a frying pan, preferably one that’s non-stick. Put a tbsp of cooking oil in the pan and spread it around to fully coat the pan. I use either olive oil, coconut oil, or soybean oil for this. Put the pan on a medium fire for it to heat up.

Step 5 - Coat Your Tofu Nuggets

Place the tofu into the seasoning, close it up, and shake it around in there until each tofu cube is completely coated.

Step 6 - Cook Your Tofu Nuggets

Place the coated tofu into the pan and cook each side for 2-3 minutes. Periodically check the tofu to see how its cooking. You can tell its ready to flip or take out when they are a golden color with only a hint of brown to them. If you like them cooked more, that’s ok too. Once they’re done, take them out of the pan and place them on a paper towel to soak up any extra oil that’s still on them.

That’s it!
